The players in control were asked a series of questions and each correct answer was worth 10 more seconds of sweep time. The first half was played with the first set of players and the second half was played with the second set. There were two Mini-Sweeps per show and they began each half of the question round. On some episodes, if the question was a health food, a 75-dollar gift certificate from Naturally Yours Health Foods Limited was used. But, if the partner ran out of time to find the correct product, found the correct product with no sticker, or found the correct product when time is up, no bonus was awarded. If the partner could find it within 20 seconds, he/she won a cash bonus of $50 added to the team's sweep total. The first player to buzz-in with a correct answer scored 10 seconds and gave his/her partner a chance to go on what was known as a "Mini-Sweep" The running player ran through the aisles of the market to find the specially-marked product that answered the first question. To start, host Monte would read a question with a rhyming couplet or a fact. Then the teams had a chance to add more time to their sweep times. To start, the three teams were given one minute (1:00). It was hosted by Tino Monte, the "host and games master extraordinaire," according to the opening, and Dave King was the announcer, who called for the items at the beginning of the show. Supermarket Sweep was a game show where three teams of two contestants (usually siblings, a parent & child, best friends, or spouses) played a game of answering questions and supermarket shopping. "Have you ever dreamt of running through a supermarket, grabbing everything you want, and filling your basket 'til it overflows? Live that dream by playing along with today's contestants on Canada's hottest (new) game show, Supermarket Sweep! Grab a cup of your favorite blend of Nabob coffee, and test your shopping skills with our eager contestants as they try to win cash and other fabulous prizes on the one and only Supermarket Sweep! Are you ready to go shopping? (AUDIENCE: "YEAH!") Who's got the (insert three items)? Ok, you're on! Now, here's our host and games master extraordinaire! TINO MONTE!" This is a classic game show worth checking out.Syndication/Global: Septem– September 15 1995 The games are neat (like the 30 Second Shootout, which each team has thirty seconds to guess three products in the style of The $10,000 Pyramid), and the big sweep has some neat gimmicks (including inflatables of food mascots which has a random money bonus amount). Regardless of winning or losing, the team who got to the final round keeps their winnings, and the other two teams get parting gifts (so they don't leave empty handed). The team has the highest amount afterwards goes on to the final round, where they have one minute to find three marked products tied to three clues (the third product hiding five thousand dollars in cash). The big sweep is neat as it has all three teams going through the supermarket to get the most in groceries and other bonuses (bonuses which also differ by episode) with commentary by Johnny Gilbert (who is best known as the announcer for Jeopardy!). The two rounds add some variety, as each one has a different view each episode, but what is similar is the questions in them (as well as the round robin round at the end of round two) add time to a team's sweep time, which is used for the best part of the show: the big sweep. The first two rounds start with a mini-sweep, which starts with a question, and whoever gets it right has ten seconds added to their sweep time and the teammate goes through the supermarket to search for the product that was the question's answer, with bonus money awarded based on fast he or she gets said product back to David. Hosted by David Ruprecht, the game show pits three teams of two people against each other for the chance to win $5,000. Airing on Lifetime, Supermarket Sweep is basically a weird idea: a game show set within a supermarket, with all the questions based around food, but it actually works, especially in a time before I ever knew of the Food Network (where a show like this would have better fit). Supermarket Sweep is one of those game shows I saw as a kid.
